Ok, so it’s getting cold. And really dark. At 5pm. And maybe all you want to do is pump yourself up with pumpkin lattes and carby pastries in the morning to wake up. But there is hope with this magical smoothie!
In an attempt to create a smoothie that is way better than a bucket of coffee, I just started throwing things into the blender one morning. I needed a way to get some flax meal into my bod and smoothies are the best way to do it. I try to drink lemon water in the morning, so I decided to just throw all of the lemon juice in here instead.
Then, I saw a bottle of olive oil and thought “sure, why not?”. My acupuncturist told me to eat olive oil first thing in the morning to keep my skin moisturized during cold weather (Hi Ausra!). She meant to eat it straight off of a spoon, but let’s just say this is the same thing, ok? Then, cayenne! Sure, let’s make it spicy and boost our metabolism! Then, let’s add a little agave sweetness to offset the tart of the lemon and spicy cayenne.
Then, I had some fresh ginger that I had bought for no apparent reason. I just really wanted to use it in something. It’s supposed to be amazing for the bod, stomach, and digestion. It turns out that it is made of glitter and rainbows and unicorns. And I’m now obsessed with it. I love this stuff. The flavor is so refreshing. But, it’s like cilantro – you either love it or are all meh about it.
So, I threw all of this in a blender with some almond milk and created the most amazing, life-changing, awakening smoothie in the world. Ever. Seriously. Do it!
Autumn Wake-Me-Up Ginger Cherry Smoothie

(Makes about 16 ounces … and I drink all of it, despite the two super chic skinny glasses in the photo)
Time: about 15 minutes (depending how quickly you can slice + dice ginger and squeeze lemon!)
1/2 cup frozen cherries
1/3 cup frozen raspberries
1/4 cup frozen pineapple chunks
1 tsp to 1 tbsp fresh ginger, skinned and sliced (vary depending on your taste)
Dash of cayenne pepper
Squeeze of agave nectar (about 1/2 tsp, and more if needed)
Juice of 1 small lemon
1 tsp olive oil
2/3 – 3/4 cup milk unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or favorite milk) (+ more if needed during blending)
2 tbsp flax meal or 1 tbsp chia seed (I like flax in this smoothie)
Handful of baby spinach (optional)
Put frozen fruit, ginger, cayenne, agave, lemon juice, and olive oil in the blender in the order listed above. Pour almond milk over the ingredients until almost all covered. Start blending, using the ice crush setting to break down the frozen fruit, about 20-30 seconds. If contents of blender start getting stuck, add more almond milk or cold water.
Once fruit is crushed and blending becomes smoother, then continue to blend on purée setting for another 15 seconds. If you’re using spinach, add this in and blend for another 10 seconds. Once contents are smooth, stop the blender and add 2 tbsp ground flax meal or chia seeds (or both) and blend again on lowest setting (like the stir setting) until just combined.
Then, serve and enjoy! It’s spicy, sweet, tart, fresh & delish. And the kick of cayenne & lemon together will surely wake you up!
P.S., I’ve tried this without certain ingredients and it’s not the same. I forgot to add lemon juice one morning and it was bland. Tried it without the agave and it was mouth-puckering tart. Try it like it’s written first and adjust to your taste the next time. I think you could leave the ginger out if you’re not a fan and it would still make a fine smoothie, though I have not tried that yet. I also threw in a large handful of spinach one morning and it blends right in perfectly. Frozen fruit is available anytime so you can make this baby all fall and winter long!
