soft dove grey or sexy rich charcoal?

When a friend emailed me about a bedroom wall color dilemma she was having, I felt honored to provide design consultation. She now has ten varying shades of grey painted on her white walls and has been gauging interest for each color at different times of the day for the past several days.

Was it a coincidence that the two finalist greys [of the full ten] she sent me also happen to be two of my top favorite nail polish colors? I think not.

Sephora by OPI: Break A Leg-Warmer! [sephora]
Illamasqua: DWS [in person, this is a soft dove grey. showing darker in this photo, sourced from temptalia. purchase at sephora.]

The furniture in both of these photos is reflective of what will be used in her bedroom.

My gut reaction to the charcoal option was yes, this one! It’s so sexy, sultry and sophisticated. The styling of the room is also outstanding and supports the wall color perfectly:

While the dove grey is calm and soothing, it didn’t affect me as strongly as the charcoal. Though, I do think it is a nice color for sleep and relaxation:

I love drama and the charcoal definitely achieves that effect. It’s more chic and really transforms the bedroom into a luxurious retreat.

Agree? Disagree? Which of these colors do you love and why?

Happy weekend!

  1. When I first started reading the question, I thought “gray walls? ugh! how depressing would that be?” but then I scrolled down to the top picture. Wow! It works! Definitely charcoal.

  2. We’re painting our master bedroom dark grey this week! It’s a warmer grey than those displayed; and we’ve yet to paint the wood trim so it’s still a nutty brown. Love it already though!

    1. Yes, it’s such an amazing color for the bedroom! Thank you for visiting the blog! — New Year’s resolution – promise to reply to comments in a timely manner. If I don’t do it immediately, I forget and I’m so sorry! Happy holidays!
